Pleo Dinosaur – Will He Become Extinct?

By Paul K Smith

Sad news for gadget fans, whether young or old: Ugobe, the company that created Pleo the dinosaur, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The news, confirmed just over a month ago, seems to have finally laid to rest any speculation over the future of the scaley robot from the Jurassic period.

Introduced in 2006, Pleo was touted as the must have Christmas present that year and sales exceeded expectations; 100,00 models sold worldwide with the Ugobe Pleo making around $20 million. But even after this phenomenal surge in sales the company was still left with approximately $3 million in debt! One supplier has even filed a suit for non-payment.

Currently, the Ugobe website is down and the company has announced that all employees have been laid off.

The reports seems to have stirred up emotions from many both owners and fans of the quirky robot dinosaur!

Is this one extinction event that Pleo can avoid? Maybe. A number of interested parties are currently eyeing up the robot candy on the table - Ugobe hold a number of patents that could be incorporated into future toys (including an all new Pleo, risen from the ashes!)

It looks like harsh economics and the tightening of consumers belt may well be meteor that finished the Pleo Robotic Dinosaur but, for the kids sake (and my own), I do hope that another company is up to the challenge. After all, it would be a real shame to see the back of this robot dinosaur.

If this is his final demise it could well mark a high for retailers. This toy is much loved and is highly sought after gift. In light of the Chapter 7 announcement, the toy may well become a collectors item. Could now be the time to try and grab a Pleo toy before stocks run out?

My name is Paul K Smith and I own Pleo Dinosaur. If you want to buy Pleo in the UK, come on over and take a look.
